As a third grade teacher, I believe in creating a classroom that is respectful, where students feel safe, valued and included. I strive to provide positive reinforcement and feedback. I do my best to give my student clear goals that are challenging yet achievable, and they are able to understand what is expected of them. It is important that these children believe in their ability to improve and learn from their mistakes. I want my students to feel comfortable expressing their thoughts, and ideas and I hope to help my students thrive and achieve to their full potential!

   Let’s Read!

Why Read 20 Minutes At Home? | Gracepoint Church Library

Third grade is a pivotal year for reading development. Students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Mastering reading fluency and comprehension at this stage sets a strong foundation for future academic success. Fluency allows students to read text smoothly, freeing up cognitive resources to focus on understanding the content. Comprehension enables students to take in meaning from the text, expanding their knowledge base across various subjects.

Reading fluency and comprehension are essential for third graders to open up their full potential by boosting  their confidence,  finding success in other subject areas, exposing them to new ideas and developing a life long habit of learning and discovery.

Listed below are some strategies I am using in my classroom to help my students grow in fluency and reading comprehension.

  1. Echo Reading: I read a text aloud, and have students follow along, echoing my reading. This helps them to match my pace and intonation.
  2. Choral Reading: We read aloud together, either in small groups or as a whole class. It is motivating and a fun way to practice fluency.
  3. Whisper Reading: I have my students read passages into whisper phones to enhance their fluency and reading comprehension by amplifying their voices to enable students to hear themselves read, without having them worry that others can hear.
  4. Timed Reading: To help build speed and accuracy, students read passages within a set time limit.
  5. Visualization: I encourage my students to create mental images of the text. This helps them better understand the story and its characters.
  6. Questioning: I encourage my students to ask questions about the text. This can help them think critically and help with understanding.
  7. Making Connections: Students share their own experiences that connect to text that we are reading in our classroom. This can help give more meaning of the text.
  8. Inferencing: I work with my students to  make inferences based on the text. This helps them understand implied meanings and draw conclusions.

I received my BA in Elementary Education from St. Ambrose  University. While pursuing my degree, I had my first experience with John F. Kennedy Catholic School participating in a field experience in a fourth grade classroom. I am now in my my 45th year at JFK where I have taught kindergarten, second grade, third grade, fourth grade  and also a little bit of PE. Teaching children of former students is a unique and rewarding experience. I feel it’s a testament to the impact JFK teachers have had on these families.  I have two children who attended JFK, and they have blessed me with four grandchildren who I love spending time participating in all kinds of activities or just hanging out. My husband Keith and I enjoy watching sports, attending concerts, and spending time with family. I enjoy working with the staff and families at JFK and look forward to working with a new group of  students each year.
