Welcome to First Grade!
This is a very special year in your child’s school career. First grade is naturally a time of tremendous academic, social and emotional growth. It is a time when children’s curiosity about the world around them flourishes.

Academics
During the first semester, the first graders will practice the short vowel sounds and study plants and animals. Your child will learn how to read, spell, write sentences, add, subtract, and so much more.
During the second semester, the first graders will learn the long vowel sounds and study light and sound. Your child will learn about time, money, write stories, and so much more!
We will attend All School Masses on Wednesdays and Holy Days. The first graders also enjoy priest visits to our classroom.
Homework
Math . . . . . . .two worksheets a week, usually on Tuesday and Wednesday. These worksheets will cover skills we have already done in class and are an opportunity for your child to show how independent they are!
Reading . . . . have your child read 10 minutes every night. They will bring home short decodable stories on their worksheets several times a week and these are perfect to read over at home.

High Frequency Words – these are words that appear often in sentences and stories. Knowing these words help your child read fluently and give them confidence. We will learn or review 11 words each week. I will send these words home on Monday and the goal is for your child to read them easily by Friday.
